Suggest Remedy For Persistent Neck Discomfort

Posted on Thu, 23 Jul 2015
Question: I still have the neck discomfort. My doctor ran all the inflammatory marker tests & all were normal. I saw an ENT specialist who found swolling on one edge of the epiglottis & mucous shreds on the other side. I will be seeing a GI Specialist but not til Sept. I called the co. That makes my coronary stent & it is composed of over 30% nickel. I am allergic to nickel. Will see a Allergy specialist next week. Any further ideas? I am beginning to believe this neck pain is related to my heart. XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:

Hello Joanne!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern about possible adverse reaction from nickel compound of your intra-coronary stent, I would like to explain that there exist some early studies which highlighted the possibility of stent complications in patient allergic to nickel or other stent metal components.

There are several case reports which try to link stent complications (especially stent thrombosis) to nickel allergy.

Nevertheless, a recent well fitted Mayo Clinic study with 29 patients known to be allergic to stent metal compounds, found no significant differences (in stent related complications and overall risk of ischemic heart events, etc, as well as regarding markers of inflammation and allergy) compared with nonallergic patients.

In conclusion, this issue remains a matter of opened uncertainties. Further large studies are necessary to elucidate this topic.

Some important laboratories (innovative in the field of stent development), have released special allergy testing packages to clarify this issue.

You need to contact with your attending cardiologist to see the opportunity for such testing.

Returning to your complain of neck pain and its possible connection with any stent related complication, I would explain that cardiac enzymes testing, an exercise cardiac stress testing or a radionuclide cardiac imagine testing would elucidate this issues.

You need to discuss with your attending doctor about this issues.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

Feel free to ask me whenever you need! Greetings! Dr. Iliri
