Question: I have been experiencing angeoedema episodes. Last summer, my Dr. Changed mt gout medicine from allopurinol to Uloric. Three months later had my first episode. At that time they thought it was from ace inhibitor in blood pressure medicine...another episode a few months later and a third and fourth within the last few weeks. I am now off Uloric. Recently put back on allopurinal...gout attack and angioedema occurred. What is the best treatment for this and how do I prevent this.? Are we correct in assuming, it is mess or can it be something else?

Ukoric better than Allopurinol

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

I have read your query and understood your problem.

You have mentioned that you get allergic reasons and angioedema with Allopurinol. Yes, Allopurinol has been shown to cause sometimes life threatening allergic reactions including Stevens XXXXXXX syndrome. Since you are developing reaction, it is best to avoid it.

Uloric or Febuxostat is a novel new drug with much less side effects and better efficacy than Allopurinol on taking daily storage for the control of chronic Gout.

Gout can occur even when the serum Uric acid levels are normal. You must take precautions like according chicken, meat, meat gravies, spinach, broccoli, salmon, dried fish, sardines. You cab have milk and milk products as they have a known protective role. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and Gout flare ups. Avoid obesity by regular exercise. Perform Yoga and deep breathing exercise for stress relief.

Kindly discuss with your Doctor about these drugs and the fact that you get allergic reactions with Allopurinol. He will keep you only on Uloric which is better for you. Also follow the precautions strictly to avoid Gout flare ups.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer follow up queries.

Thanking you.

Do you feel it is a reaction to these meds and not something else that is causing the angioedema? I am concerned
Since I recently had a kidney removed due to renal cell cancer. My Drs. Aren't sure that meds are the cause ....

Brief Answer:
Allopurinol appears like the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

The medicine Allopurinol is a well known cause of such reactions. Also you have noticed that after taking it you get the Angioedema.

Regarding the Renal cell carcinoma, there's is no obvious reason to cause Angioedema episodes directly. It would be wise to consult your Surgeon or Oncologist in this regard.

You could suggest your Doctor to perform a trial omitting Allopurinol from your regimen and using only Uloric as the mainstay therapy for your Gout. Follow the mentioned precautions and your should be fine.

I hope I have answered your query.

Thanking you.

Dr. Aashish Raghu
