Suggest Remedy For Severe Back Pain While Recovering From Staph Infection

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Sep 2015
Question: Short version: In March/April developed extreme staph infections / abcesses in back associated with extreme pain in the back. In mid May, The first abscess, "the size of a large artichoke," per surgeon was drained through needles. Second abscess covered bottom 5 vertebrae and was drained through 3.5 hour surgery which included work on spine. Severe spinal stenosis remains. In mid XXXXXXX & July, had to relearn to walk, progressing from walker to cane to limp, all while wearing an antibiotic ball around neck, 24/7. Three weeks ago after an additional month on twice a day antibiotics, received clean report from infection doc.
While in first week of hospital stay, fell on tailbone and fractured coccyx. That fracture wasn't found until Friday, a week ago. Doc, looking for source of extreme pain, found elevated white blood count and after additional x-rays and blood tests, the broken tail bone. Went through a 2 hour plus MRI on Wednesday and Thursday had an outpatient treatment where approximately one pint of infected blood was removed. This sample being sent for evaluation to determine proper antibiotic.
QUESTION: Focusing back on Coccyx, the source of current pain, how long will I be in (sometimes severe) pain while it heals. Sit on a coccyx cushion for a little relief and left over pain meds help a bare minimum. Is this one, two or more pain to look forward to?

Brief Answer:
Pain will take a while to subside

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Pain is usually dependent on how fast the healing takes place and how soon you recover from the infection. Repeated infection means it will take longer to heal.

However based on my experience, the pain usually takes about 4-6 weeks. This is the maximum pain you will face, it will not increase. It will slowly and gradually start decreasing day by day. If you are not able to bear the pain then ask for fentanyl patches, they are a small patches applied over the skin to give 24 hours pain free living. It is highly effective, speak to your doctor about it

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me
