Question : I have a headache tht started @3AM yesterday. I've had them before but not this severe

More information needed about your age, health condition, previous health problems, drugs used, and distribution of the headache, duration etc.

However, in general when there is a change in headache intensity and character in comparison to usual ones, brain imaging studies are needed to address properly the condition.

Discuss with your primary care Doctor about getting done brain CT scan or MRI.
