default
Posted on Thu, 3 Dec 2015
Question: My dad is a diabetic for almost 12 years and now he is on some of the sugar medicines and for the past two days he has got cold and fever as well..

My dad is having severe cramps or catches all over the body, the hips, the leg muscles, fingers on the legs and hands etc. Diabetologist prescribed Evilon LC and Enzy 3 (Enzy 3 in the morning and evilon LC in the night), since in the night it was unbearable I requested doctor for help and he has prescribed this tab..

what are the causes for the cramps or catches.

My dads sodium level is at 133, Pottasium is at 4.4, Chloride at 95 and Calcium at 9.5

How do we overcome this Cramp problem, the pain is really unbearable..

Kindly advise.

Brief Answer:
Take drugs and fluids, investigate blood sugar and vitamin b12, d3

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
The cramps in diabetes may be due to electrolyte imbalance, vitamin D3 or vitamin B12 deficiency or high sugar leading to volume depletion.
What are the current blood sugar levels.
Give plenty of fluids and drugs as prescribed.
For pain gabapentin or nortriptyline may be given.
Get investigated for current sugar levels, vitamin D3 and Vitamin B12.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Thank you very much for your response sir.

Dads sugar levels are as given below
Date
7/11 - 215 (after Dinner)
8/11 - 199 (BB), 240 (AB) and 285 (After dinner)
9/11 - 211 (BB), 220 (AB), 220 (After Lunch), 274 (after Dinner)
10/11 - 173 (BB), 260 (AB), 220 (After Lunch), 274 (After dinner)
11/11 - 185 (BB), 253 (AB)
12/11 - 140 (after Lunch)
13/11 - 176 (BB), 220 (After Breakfast)
15/11 - 231 (AB), 170 (After Lunch), 292 (After dinner)

The sugar level were well within 170 range PPBS and FBS always used to be 100 or 105.. but now there is lot of inconsistency.

For cramps currently dads diabetologist has prescribed Enzy 3 (morning) and Evilon LC (Night).. will this help to reduce cramps

Dads creatine level went very high almost upto 2.2 when he was treated for dengue
and then came back to normal which was 1.4..

all medicines which he is taking now I have provided, will any of this have an impact on Kidney and therefore creatine is inconsistent?

The electrolyte test was conducted and the results are

Sodiumn - 133
Chloride - 4.4
Pottasium - 95
Calcium - 5.6

let me know your thoughts and way forward sir.

Thanks

regards
