Brief Answer:
Moisturisers for dryness, antihistaminics and gabapentine for itching

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for being at HealthCareMagic .

For dry skin apply plenty of moisturisers frequently and liberally. Go for regular oiling of the body like using coconut oil. Don't use hot water for bathing instead use lukewarm water and don't use harsh soaps on the body.

As far as itching is concerned I recommend my patients to take antihistaminics like Chlorpheniramine or Hydroxyzine along with Tablet Gabapentine. The dose of Chlorpheniramine is 4 mg twice daily and that of Hydroxyzine is 25 mg twice daily.Gabapentine is taken in the dose of 300 mg three times daily. All these medicines are taken after meals .oOther treatments which have been found effective in combating the itching of end stage renal disease are UVB phototherapy and activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is taken as 6 gram once daily. All these medicines except chlorpheniramine are prescription drugs and you need to see the doctor in person to get them.

However the only curative and reliably effective treatment for itching in ESRD is kidney transplantation.

I hope to have your query and would be happy to clarify any further doubts.

Regards
Dr Asmeet
