Question: Does this sound bacterial or viral? I woke up saturday morning with very sore throat, joint pain, headache, chills and had fever of 102-103 (basically thought i was dying) Sunday morning fever was only 99.0 still had very sore throat and joint pain however headache and feeling of impending death had subsided. Today throat hurt even worse, i cant swallow wothout wanting to scream and my mouth tastes disgusting, however joint pain is almost nonexistant, Glands are swollen in neck under jaw and about midneck down.. tonsils are red and slightly swollen i think but not super red looking. No white spots on tonsils or tounge and left ear has intermittent stabbing pain. No cough, runny nose, or sneezing any of the days either. Also it rained here for 24 hours flooding my basement and causing my house to be a little musty smelling on friday night and i woke up saturday with this. Not sure if its related but thought id mention it. As far as i know i do not have allergies

Brief Answer:
At the moment it appears a viral flu attack

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. From the above description of your symptoms, the probability of a viral flu is more likely. The symptoms began with sudden onset and there is no significant worsening of the fever. The throat pain in viral flu can occasionally worsen and you will recover from this slowly over a week.

2. It looks like the particular strain of flu caused mainly sore throat, mild fever and joint pain. There is no cough or rhinitis as you have mentioned. The weather changes in your surroundings can cause this type of flu attack.

3. Please take precautions, do warm water gargle two times daily and eat soft diet which can be swallowed with minimum pain and discomfort. If there is any worsening or symptoms persisting for over a week then a secondary bacterial infection can be suspected.

Hope your query is answered.
Please write back if you have any doubts.

Ok thanks. I was hiping it sounded viral. I really dont like to take antibiotics. I always fear allergic reaction although ive never had one. I still have really sore throat and swollen glands in neck but no other symptoms. Hopefully thus doesnt last much longer. 5 days is long enough.

Brief Answer:
It can take some more time to recover from the flu

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. I too wish you a quick recovery. Most flu people get well in 5 to 7 days though some can take about 10 days to get back to normal.

2. If symptoms are not worsening then bacterial is unlikely and antibiotics are not required.

3. Please keep yourself warm and avoid the rain and cold.

Hope your query is answered.
