Question : ear/eustachian tube infection (otitis media) prescribed amoxicillin 875 MG wth antipyrine -benzocaine otic solution for pain.
Have been on the above since last Weds evening and still having sharp stabbing pain behind my ear. Also feel like my vision is a bit blurred up close...are the two things connected?

Brief Answer:
Consider a follow-up visit

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for using HCM,

I read carefully your query and I understand your concern.

It's rare to have a middle ear infection in your age. And even if it happens as a complication after a severe common cold, it should not need treatment with antibiotics.
The fact that this is happening to you is uncommon. So, to be sure that its not something serious, I would suggest to confirm these possible diagnoses.
-- Mastoiditis: It will give painful of the bone after the ear, swollen and red. That happens when you are resistant to the antibiotic you are using and you may need a stronger one.
-- Giant cells arteritis: Gives a pain in touch of the temporal area, just over the ears, and it will give progressive loss of vision.

If I was your caring doctor I would recommend to consider a follow-up visit, just to be sure that the ear infection has not complicated with the ones mentioned above, and if it has try to find the reason by doing a good physical exam.

Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you need more clarification.

Take care,
Dr. Papaqako
