Question: I am on zoloft and having ringing in my ears. Also a lot of stress in my life inducing more depression. I am wondering if I need to switch to a new drug?

I am on zoloft 150 mg for major depression. I have been trying to go down unsuccessfully, but a new side effect in ringing in my right ear and worsening depression. Should I switch drugs?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Zoloft 150mg is a good dose, so if you are still depressed and now having an unusual side effect of ringing in your ears, it would be appropriate to slowly taper off Zoloft and at the same time start a new SSRI medication. I recommend Escitalopram (Lexapro), because it is very well tolerated with few side effects, no ringing in the ears, and will hopefully treat your depression and help you feel better. This strategy will help you feel better!
