Suggest Remedy For Swelling On The Right Knee

Posted on Tue, 2 Feb 2016
Question: I have been wondering why my right inner knee and around that area looks larger than the left knee. It is not red and not painful. My doctors are more concerned about my weight and exercise. I have regular health check ups and have seen a specialist, had tests and told there was nothing to be concerned about, regarding my knee. Because I am 170 lbs and 4 ft. 11 inches, I finally got the message regarding my weight and exercise and have been taking walks and watching what I eat. It was difficult for me to take the recommendations of my doctors because I have never had problems with weight and exercise until later in my life. I am now 68 years old and have a few issues with my cholesteroI and pressure, but not enough to take medications. just to do extra check up, I have recently signed up or Life Line Screening. What do you recommend?

Brief Answer:
Osteoarthritis can be controlled with lifestyle modification

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case and I think you are having knee osteoarthritis. In this condition there is damage in knee cartilage and reduction unjoint gap. Patient complains of pain during knee bending and sitting for long time.
There is no definitive cure except surgery. But in early stages disease can be controlled by physiotherapy and medicines. I would suggest you to do following things.
1.Physiotherapy like static quadriceps exercises.
2.Regular calcium and vitamin D 3 tablets.
3.Hot water fomentation and volition ointment .
4.Knee cap for support.
5.Diet control and weight reduction as you are doing.
I hope these steps will help you in slowing disease progression. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks

Thank you so much for that feedback on my question about the right knee and the surrounding area. I immediately, started taking your suggestions and look forward to improvements. Additionally, for my Osteoarthritis condition, my primary care physician recommended as needed for swelling and for pain, Meloxicam 15mg tablets. I have taken a few. Do you think this is a good idea to continue?

Also, around 2009, while at work, prior to my retirement, I recall having fallen really hard while walking briskly along a hallway and landed on a concrete floor. I endured a lot of pain that day, but continued working and never got treated. Eventually, the pain went away and I think later this problem surfaced,, I sometimes wonder could this old, untreated injury be a reaction to that fall? Could you tell me if there is any other method of treatment I can use to focus on improvement, after having this additional information?

Brief Answer:
Meloxicam can be taken for short period

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
There is no harm in taking Meloxicam for short period but it should not be taken for long time as in that case it can cause kidney problems. As you have history of fall in past, it may have caused progression of arthritis. But that is not going to change our management plan for this .
Let me know if there is any other followup questions.

Do you have any suggestions on where I can purchase Volition Ointment? Is it usually sold over the counter, in drug stores or is this a prescription ointment? Is there another common name for this ointment or a substitute in the event it is not available in my area.

Thanks.
