Question: Thank You
My father in law was diag. with cancer of the lymph nodes tonight. He is also in AFib. He has a large mass in his umbical area. I want to know how long he has to live? I know we are not God but I need a ball park. There are 8 kids and they are all over this country. He has been in severe pain for a week. I am a retired RN and I am his daughter in law. He does not want chemo. Is there not a way to know how bad it is? Threstu his blood? I have his blood tests in front of me.

I CAN SCAN THE TESTS WITH MY PHONE IF THAT WOULD HELP YOU. I ALSO FORGOT TO TELL YOU HE HAS LOST 22 LBS IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

Brief Answer:
Need more reports

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
I am an oncologist of several years experience and have been dealing with such cancers on a daily basis.
It is not possible to answer your queries based on the information that you have provided.
I need to know the following reports-
1. His blood counts--hemoglobin, total leukocyte counts, platelet count
2. His bone marrow aspiration/biopsy report
3. His biopsy report from the lymph node
4. His PET/CT scan report.
5. His associated medical conditions like diabetes hypertension, etc if any
6. His general condition, as in, is he bed ridden or he moves around most of the time. Does he require help in daily routine activities or he can manage them on his own.
If any of these have not been done, it is advisable that you get them done in consultation with your oncologist, as these are mandatory before giving prognosis or starting treatment.
Meanwhile you can send the available reports and I will try to answer your question and guide you in your further course of action.
It will help if you send a direct query in my name so it doesnt land up with someone else and cause confusion.
Thank you.

We got this Dx. at midnight. I am worried about the afib. He has never been sick in his life.

Brief Answer:
Get a biopsy and PET/CT done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
I have seen the reports and they appear essentially normal to me. So I wonder how you reached the conclusion that it is a cancer of the lymph nodes. If there are any other reports, please send them as well.

If indeed there is suspicion of cancer of the lymph nodes, then ask your doctor to arrange a biopsy from the lump. If it is a big one, then this can be done with a large bore needle called a core-cut needle under ultrasound or CT guidance. This will conclusively tell whether it is cancer or not and the type. If it turns out to be lymph node cancer then get a PET scan done and a bone-marrow biopsy.
Once we have these reports, we will be better able to plan the treatment.

He appears to be reasonably healthy and should be able to tolerate the treatment when we plan it. As to the Afib, it appears unrelated and can happen at this age. I suggest you consult a cardiologist immediately and take necessary treatment.
