Question : I have been prescribed Oxycontin for lower back pain by my RA MD.. I have taken it for perhaps 4yrs.
I would like to be off this drug. I am 80 with a very slight heart problem. I am so upset this was prescribed as I can't get off it. Is it possible to get over this ?

Brief Answer:
Yes of course it is possible, but you will need a doctors supervision

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Of course it is, although it may not be easy, and you will undoubtedly require a doctors supervision and guidance through it, but it is most certainly possible.

First of all, we need to check on the pain (whether it is still present or not). If it is, then we may have to find you a substitute which is much milder than oxycontin. The next thing required it to start the weaning off process. Your doctor will choose to reduce your dose by about 20 % for the first week or two; followed by a further drop in dosage the next week; and so on.

You will then reach a stage where you will be taking oxycontin only on alternate days, then once in 3 days, then once in a week, and then you can completely stop it. But please understand that a few withdrawal symptoms are expected, and if anything moderate or intolerable is experienced, your doctor may have to increase the dose mildly and go about the weaning process a little slower.

As you may have understood by now ma'am, a doctors supervision is pivotal, but I am sure you can get off it. Please discuss all this with your doctor, and also do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
