Question: Who is the best medicine for high BP without side effects
doctor
Answered by Dr. Vivek Chail (33 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Restriction of excess salt and doing meditation is best for hypertension

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. If you are mildly hypertensive then the best way to control the blood pressure is by reducing amount of salt in diet. Some amount of regular salt has to be taken for proper functioning of the system and extra salt might be avoided. Salt contains sodium and chloride and this causes higher blood pressure due to the sodium channels in the body. If sodium is kept normal then the blood pressure might get controlled by itself.

2. Meditation done for 30 minutes has also proven helpful in decreasing stress levels and this causes balance between the systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

3. There is no single medicine for blood pressure that is completely free from side effects. However starting medicines like calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors and beta blockers at a low dose is suggested with regular follow up with the doctor and then take regular medicine. Some people might complain of side effects like swelling of limbs and tiredness with some group of medicine and then this can be solved by giving a medicine from another group.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Brief Answer:
Please take medicine from group ACE inhibitor/ angiotensin receptor blocker

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. Blood pressure is a dynamic variable and is due to the pressure exerted by flowing blood on the walls of arteries. The right way to confirm high blood pressure is to record the blood pressure after 30 minutes of physical and mental rest and for 3 consecutive days at the same time of the day and using the same instrument. If the blood pressure recording is persistently above 140/ 90 mm Hg on every occasion then it is confirmed as hypertension

2. Once hypertension is confirmed then the cause is to be confirmed by doing tests including kidney Doppler in a young person like you. Since your blood pressure is shooting up suddenly, therefore it is important to investigate the cause of hypertension, whether is essential or secondary hypertension.

3. The recent reports on medicine for initial hypertension in young people recommends treatment with medicine which is from the group ACE inhibitors (eg enalapril, lisinopril and ramipril) or angiotensin receptor blockers, candesartan and valsartan) and iIf there is associated sympathetic activity like increased heart rate or flushing then a beta blocker like metoprolol, nadolol and atenolol is added.

4. Please discuss the prescriptions given by your doctors at XXXXXXX and then I will try and help you to choose the most suitable one.

5. If ECG, echocardiography and CT angiography are normal then there is no need to worry about heart right now but control of blood pressure is important.

Hope your query is answered.
