Question: I have been taking Losartan Potassium 25mg for some time but I started having side effects.; Cough, tightness in chest, dizziness, swelling face, feeling weak, feeling passing out etc And today I went to see my family doctor about it and she prescribed Amlodipine Besylate 2.5mg. But I had taken Amlodipine some years ago and had bad side effects after some time, too. I should have told her this but I did not remember the name of Amlodipine when I was seeing her. The side effect from Losartan Poss. is getting worse, especially chest area feeling having a cold. I wonder I should take which one, Losartan or Amlodipine this weekend till I can contact my family doctor on Monday.
I have had really bad experiences from blood pressure medicine, Beta blocker gave me much higher BP and then ringing ear on the left side of my brain that I can not get rid of, another (don't remember the name) I had black spots in vision, and the above two. Can you suggest any BP drug I should take?

I have coughs, feel like getting cold or neumonia , my chest safocated, difficult to talk /voice somAetime. This might be side effect of Blood Pressure drug Losartan Potassium 25mg. Brief Answer:
Start Clonidin (antihypertensive).

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

It is rare to have these kind of allergic symptoms with antihypertensive drugs.
In my opinion, you should try Clonidin (arkamin) or prazocin (minipress xl).
These two are potent antihypertensive drugs with lesser allergic reaction.
So consult with your doctor and discuss about these two drugs and start any of them.
At present, you should stop losartan and take amlodipine till you contact your doctor. I know you had history of reaction to amlodipine in the past. But you can give it a try because raised blood pressure is more dengerous than its allergic reaction. And for your symptoms take antihistamine (levocetrizine or fexofenadine) and anti allergic (montelukast).
This will definitely reduce your symptoms.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
