Brief Answer:
Supplements beneficial in HSV type 2 virus

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query.

I would like to know more details from you regarding your query in order to be able to understand it better.

-Are you HSV Type 2 Positive?
-Are you/were you on antiviral medications for HSV type 2?
-Do you intend to know about alternative treatment for HSV type 2?

Talking of supplement in context of Herpes, L-Lysine has been studied to be an effective agent for reducing the occurrence, severity and decreasing the healing time for recurrent HSV infection. However, this is not commonly prescribed for herpes probably because the evidence is not strong enough and also because high doses of Lysine are known to increase serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels and therefore needs to be cautiously used

Yes

I take 500mg VALACICLOVIR per day and 1000l-lysine however the outbreaks have not stopped for the last 4 months

I read about l-lysine is only good for oral herpes and I have genital and also read that

"Supplements: You can reduce the frequency and severity of oral herpes attacks by taking L-lysine as a daily supplement (500-1,000 milligrams a day on an empty stomach). Unfortunately, using lysine does not usually work for genital herpes. As an alternative, you can try taking monolaurin, a nontoxic, antiviral supplement made from lauric acid (a fatty acid found in breast milk) and glycerin. It is used to treat infections with all strains of the herpes virus along with other viral infections including measles, and HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS. Monolaurin is believed to have the potential to permanently inactivate the fat coated viruses that cause these diseases by fluidizing the lipids (fats) and phospholipids in their envelopes, leading to the disintegration of viral particles. Monolaurin, sold under the brand name Lauricidin®, comes in the form of XXXXXXX pellets"

so should I try Lauricidin?

Brief Answer:
I would advice you to stick to approved treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Herpes specially if newly acquired can be recurrent and as the time passes by the frequency of recurrences is going to reduce. In those individuals who might still have recurrences on 500 mg of valacyclovir can take 1000 mg once daily for an year (suppressive treatment).

I won't recommend monolaurin. Monolaurin is not approved for this indication neither is L-Lysine. They even claim monolaurin to be effective for MRSA and a permanent cure for herpes. I doubt if it was so effective it would have either been acquired by pharmaceutical companies till now because that would have meant big business for them or may be it would be acquired in near future because herpes is such a common condition. Though it is available OTC for this indication. There is no FDA approval for it yet.

I would stick to a 1000 mg daily dose of valacyclovir.

First thanks for your advice and excuse my questions but this why I am here to debate with a specialist around this issue. Yes Monolaurin is not approved however there may be many reasons for this and I really get confused when I see so many positive reviews and comments from real people.

For example check XXXXXXX
http://www XXXXXXX com/Lauricidin-227-gram-8oz-jar/dp/B004I8SMOQ
110 reviews average 4.2

similar review in WebMD
http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientreview-1149-MONOLAURIN.aspx?drugid=1149&drugname=MONOLAURIN

so I wonder are all these reviews fake? what is your opinion

Brief Answer:
Stick to the recommendation

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Yes, they are indeed very tempting and it seems like a wonder drug, Is'nt it? People would do anything to get rid of herpes and wishfully believe the information, what they read on internet. This is what they cash you on.

Still, I wont suggest you to go for it because they are not medical/doctor reviews and don't know for sure if they are from real persons. There have been no trials for its use in herpes as yet.

You should take valacyclovir in a dose of 1000 mg once daily for 1 year as a suppressive dose.
