Suggest Tests To Diagnose Down Syndrome

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Oct 2014
Question: Hi, my baby is one year and six months but can't walk nor stand on his own. My doctor suspects down syndrome. Will he ever walk? And at what age do I start expecting him to walk. Though, all other signs of ds that the doctor told me to watch out for are just little, as the baby is living healthy, eats well, looks big and plays well even while sitting at a place. Please, I need your advice because am worried. The baby has never crawled, rather he will lie down when he wants to pick something.

Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms,

If Down syndrome is suspected on clinical grounds, it is important to confirm it by getting Karyotyping done for confirmation.

All children with Down's syndrome have some degree of learning disability. This varies greatly from person to person. Most children reach all the usual milestones - learning to walk, use the toilet, talk, read and write - but they do it at their own pace.

The key to ensuring your child reaches her potential is to make sure she has good medical care, along with the right social and educational support. Your child may need extra help, such as speech therapy, physiotherapy and special education, which will help her realise her potential.

Like every child, a baby with Down's syndrome needs to feel loved and valued by hisfamily, and he needs support to help her flourish. Many children are now successfully attending mainstream schools.

Regular assessment by Child development clinic will be very useful
