Question: I have squamous cell cancer in my lateral left calf, Dr. say's she has to excise it. Is there any way of knowing how widespread it is before she cuts into it?

The preferred procedure for this cancer entails using a technique that allows to assess whether all of the cancer edge has been removed or not. This is called Moh’s surgery. This way, the surgeon would cut as much as needed until all of the cancer cells are taken out. This specimen would then be sent to the laboratory to confirm that all suspicions cancerous cells were conveniently removed. This is why there us always a margin of safety to allow for this.

In all, special techniques during the surgery and after would allow for this. Before surgery, this is almost impossible.
