Suggest The Ideal Dosage For Thyronorm Taken For Hypothyroidism

Question : Hi Doc,

My mom's TSH level in test done on 14th Oct 2015 came as 12.48. She started taking THYRONORM 50 MCG after consulting a doc.

Later when she got the test done again on 16th Dec 2015, it came as 0.09. The doc has reduced the tablet to 35MCG but has asked to continue.

Please suggest if this is fine as her TSH level has gone below the normal range.

Hi,

Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your questions and understand your concerns.

Her initial TSH is high and was appropriately started on thyroid medications. Once on treatment we usually keep the TSH between 0.5 and 3. Since her TSH is low now it is appropriate to reduce the dose of thyroxine (rather than stopping it)

You can do additional tests like anti TPO antibody and ultrasound neck to see it the medications has to be continued life long.

Thanks for the reply doc. Her ANTI THYROGLOBULIN ANTIBODY (ATG/ATA) value came to 19.9 and ANTI MICROSOMAL ANTIBODY (AMA/TPO) came to 25.7. Please suggest.

Please specify the normal values of the lab. Different labs have different normal range in TPO and TG antibody.

If these antibodies are higher than the normal range of the lab, she is having hashimoto's hypothyroidism. Then it is most likely a permanent hypothyroidism and its always better to continue the medicine

Hi,

Welcome back

The antibodies are negative. So her hypothyroidism may be due to iodine deficiency or due to thyroiditis. She can increase the iodine intake in diet( take iodized salt, sea foods, milk etc and decrease the intake of cabbage, cauliflower and tapioca).

Please check the TSH after 6 weeks. It is still on the lower side the dose can be further reduced to 25, then 12.5 and can be stopped.
