Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
You father is in acute phase of knee replacement. Usually it is associated with pain, swelling and stiffness.
It is also common to experience swelling below the knee, into the calf. Most times this is a result of gravity (standing on your feet and walking). This type of swelling usually goes away in the morning if you elevate your leg at night. Wearing a compression stocking that goes above the knee can also help.
As the healing progresses and the knee gets stronger, the swelling will diminish. I advise using hot water bag regularly during the recovery.
A diet rich in protein and calcium is recommended for an early recovery. He can have ragi, milk, eggs and yogurt for an early recovery. No heavy lifting or excessive weight bearing on the leg for 4 weeks, chew food thoroughly, avoid carbonated beverages, gum, and smoking. Continue with the south XXXXXXX diet he is taking.

Avoid alcohol or drinks with caffeine in them, chocolate or spicy or greasy foods and instead take cold foods preferably liquids like milk and yoghurt.
I hope this answers your query.

Brief Answer:
Yes he can take his normal diet.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Yes. He can gradually switch to his normal diet of idly and dosa. Even dal and rice will be good for him if there is no problem of gas and indigestion.
He can take Pineapple juice, lemon juice, ginger juice, grapes, etc after every meal to avoid indigestion. Otherwise take antacids and digestive enzymes for relief.
For pain relief, he can keep the leg elevated on two pillows while resting. Take regular pain killers as advised by the physician. Doing a hot fomentation after the stitches are removed will also help.
Hope my answer is helpful.
