Suggest The Prognosis And Future Complications After Parathyroidectomy Surgery
Question: 59 year old female operated for parathyroidectomy-2016.Please suggest the prognosis and future complications is any.
Brief Answer:
Hypocalcemia, tetany.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
A patient operated for parathyroidectomy, in 2016 , and discussing the complications now, is a bit out of box. This itself shows that either all 4 glands were not removed or some forearm transplant of parathyroid tissue was done.
Still if you want to discuss a case of total parathyroidectomy, then immediately post up patient would land with hypocalcemia, hyper-phisphatemia, and tetany. To maintain serum calcium in normal range , patient would require elemental calcium 1 gm per day in 4 to 6 divided doses. also vitamin D in active calcitriol form would be required 0.25mcg to 1mcg.
Regards
Hypocalcemia, tetany.
