Question: Yes, thank you for asking. My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD less than a year ago, but her grades have continued to drop and she does not take her medication. She is a highschool XXXXXXX and recently turned 18. She describes her inability to pay attention, does not complete assignments, is very social, and decidced to live with her father 5 weeks ago because she feels less stress there. It has been painful, but my daughter and I are still on good terms. I think I represent stree for her with reminders of what she needs to complete and do and her father works llong hours and is busy. I want to help her improve her situation...develop skills and get the support she needs but where do I start?

Hello. Thank you for your question. I know this has been very difficult for you. What needs to be done is to begin to build a strong foundation of support for your daughter. Firstly, you need to speak with someone in school, perhaps one of her teachers, or a guidance counsellor. Describe what the issues are and what your concerns are. experienced educators have seen these types of scenarios before and may be able to help. i would expect them to pay a little extra attention and provide your daughter with some mentorship. Next, it is important to involve a behavioralist. This could be a psychologist, psychiatrist, behavioral therapist, social worker, etc... Just offering a child medication is never enough. There must be behavioral therapy as well. I suspect this will be very effective for your daughter. I'm afraid you will continue to have a difficult time persuading her to take her medication, without this component in place.
Finally, you need support yourself. this could be from a professional, or just a friend. you shouldn't be going through this alone.
good luck
