Question: My sister has COPD and heart issues. She is currently in a rehab center after being released from the hospital after a major COPD attack. She has lost a tremendous amount of weight (approx 60 lbs) and has no appetite and will not eat enough food to healthy recovery. Not clear why she is not able or not willing to eat and also suffering from short term dementia. Any answers?

Brief Answer:
Due to Hypoxia

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mam!

Thank you so much for writing in Healthcare Magic.

I understand your concern for your sister and feel sorry for the pain she is going through.After reading her condition and I would like to say that;

Delirium(right word instead of dementia) could be due to hypoxia meaning very low amount of oxygen reaching brain which could make her forget recent memories before ,during or after hospitalization.Her memory will come back once she recovers completely.

She might not passing stool since few days,causing her discomfort in abdomen leading to this problem.Or She will take time to get adjusted to the environment and her health.I would ask you start her on liquid diet with fruit juices and health drinks.Then slowly add semisolid food and then go to solid food.It is very important to maintain her strength so that she recovers soon.

Hope this helps.Feel free to ask more.
