Question : Hi there
I've just received the devastating news that my baby has trisomy 18 (thru am io test) is there a chance that the test could be wrong & I should seek another opinion? I've heard that taking a sample from the baby's umbilical cord is more accurate - is this the case & are these tests available in australia. I'm 42 so the positive result is doubling devastating as I'm not sure I'll fall pregnant again

I understand your concerns about trisomy 18.

It is unfortunate to hear this report. Amniocentesis is generally accurate for confirming chromosomal abnormalities like trisomy 18.

I think report is accurate. These abnormalities are expected at your age (Increased maternal age).

Sampling from baby's umbilical cord can also be done and will confirm this result. This test is done in Australia. Your local doctor will be able to give you the nearest centre doing it.
