Brief Answer:
Apetamin or ciproheptadine is to be used short term

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, Apetamin or ciproheptadine is to be used short term as it can cause liver damage in the long run as you have correctly understood.
I notice that other doctors have already advised you, but this is from my book--Health After Forty---it may help---
---Avoid foods like, chocolate, peppermint, alcohol, onions, garlic, & fatty foods, which can relax the sphincter. Carbonated & caffeinated beverages can also do the same by causing bloating & acid overload in the stomach.
---Avoid large meals
---Fat accumulation in the abdomen can exert pressure on the stomach. So losing weight may help
---Avoid tight belts & clothing.
---Nicotine can relax the sphincter, so avoid smoking & intake of tobacco.
---Never lie down & eat
---If you suffer from nighttime attacks, elevate the head end of your bed with blocks.
---regular exercise definitely helps.
---In very severe cases, surgery to tighten the sphincter called fundoplication can be undertaken.
You can revert back.
Regards
