Question: Good Afternoon,

29 year old male...I have daily GERD symptoms, and have had them for years...I had an upper GI endoscopy 5 years ago, and it was normal...I had another upper GI endoscopy yesterday, and the doctor said I have 1 centimeter of Barrett's Oesophagus...I have been doing research and am confused...I have read that it takes Barrett's 15 to 30 years to become cancerous, but that 1 out of 200 people with Barrett's get oesophageal cancer each year...does cancer happen in people who have had barrett's undetected for a long time, or am I facing a 1 in 200 risk every year from now on? I read that most people diagnosed with Barrett's have had it undetected for a long time, so since mine would have only developed recently, do I have another 10 years at least?

Still waiting on biopsy results...the initial report says 1.5 centimeter segment of suspected Barrett's Oesophagus..I won't get biopsy results until next week..the doctor told me it was very small and not much of a concern..if it is barrett's, how soon could I get cancer given that I had a normal endoscopy 5 years ago?

Brief Answer:
Answer given below

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Only with the biopsy report, I can give a personalized answer and not a "generic" one.

Not everyone with Barrett's esophagus develop malignancy as various factors are involved.

Biopsy report will say whether you have Barrett's esophagus with no dysplasia or low grade dysplasia or high grade dysplasia. The behavior of these types and the management differ.

Moreover Barrett's esophagus is also divided into Short segment (less than 3 cm) and long segment (more than 3 cm) types.
The risk of malignancy with short segment Barrett's esophagus is low.

You have a 1.5 cm long Barrett's which is a short segment one and so the risk of malignancy is low.

Regards,
Dr.R.K.
