Question: I begun slimming world last week - a diet of fruit, vegetables, and lean meat as well as small amounts of dairy (lactose free due to my lactose intolerance) and fibre - and my IBS has been triggered severely by it. I'm either constipated and flatulent or have ba. diarrhea. Is there anything you can recommend to help me? And is this normal with trying a new diet?

Brief Answer:
Need management of IBS. Weight losing triggered it not the food.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. The foods you mentioned are all nutritious and fiber rich plus lactose free diet itself helps with IBS. The reason your IBS got flared up is due t your intention to lose weight as losing weight puts a lot of stress on body and rest organs like stomach don't get enough of the supply and that leads to symptomatic flare.

I would suggest lose weight by exercise and regular means and not by reducing diet. COntinue fiber rich diet like whole grains, fruits and vegetables etc . Also avoid foods that irritate like alcohol, chocolate, caffeinated beverages such as coffee and sodas, medications that contain caffeine, dairy products, and sugar-free sweeteners such as sorbitol or mannitol. Chewing gum or drinking from the straw also leads to air entry in to stomach and worsens IBS.

DOnt skip meals. Eat in time. When you have diarrhea eat small frequent meals and you will feel better. You may use OTC antidiarrheal meds but in low doses. Exercise regularly and have a proper routine in life from sleep to eating and every thing in time.

Peppermint herb also helps with IBS. Its a natural antispasmodic. Go for enteric coated capsules if you have acid reflux or heartburn problem. Or you may need to take it with plenty of fluids. STW 5 ( Iberogast) also has shown some benefits.

Probiotics will also help your IBS. yogurt is world's best Probiotic all natural.

Talk to your gastroenterologist and a dietitian for further management.

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Khan
