Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: Hi,
I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism (and trying to conceive), with TSH level being 10.5, the doc suggested thyronorm 50mcg along with multivit and iodine supp, for 3 mnths while continuing trying to conceive. Is the dosage sufficient for me to conceive or should the dosage be increased? also I have been diagnosed with PCOS and have had irregular periods (around 40days cycle), but the doc did not suggest any med for this. So I am worried as to will I be able to conceive this way, I have completed 1 month of thyronorm dosage and had my cycle in 33 days. Also my doc did not conduct specific test for T3, T4, and prescribed just on the basis of TSH, so am I on the right track, please help

Brief Answer:
Get you TSH level tested again to modify doses.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.
I am Dr Rakesh Sharma answering your query.
I can understand your concern.
TSH level is good indicator of thyroid function.T3 and T4 are governed by TSH.
Whether to modify the dose or will be decided by Another TSH test after one month of thyronorm.
Get your TSH done , morning blood sample , after taking thyronorm , give the sample.
The dose will be change accordingly.
As for as PCOS is concerned,They are correlated.
PCOS is a fairly common condition that some women, especially with hypothyroidism,
PCOS and hypothyroidism have many symptoms in common, such as “anovulation” i.e. menstruation without releasing an oocyte (egg cell). Some propose this is the cause of PCOS if anovulation is long term with it’s related low progesterone.
In my opinion you are all ready showing signs of improvement, as your cycle is coming to normal. This is indicative of right track.
Hope I have answered your query.
If any thing else you are welcome.
Good luck.

Thanks a lot, It was indeed of great help.

I wanted to know if I can workout during my ovulation period, or in general while trying to conceive, does it affect the conception? I have been working out on treadmill from past 15 days, at the rate of 6kmph, 45 minutes( including warmup and cool down), for 5 days a week. Kindly let me know if I have to take any precautions or stop altogether while trying to conceive, considering I have hypothyroidism and may have any problem for implantation in future. Also should I start wearing looser clothes to help successful conception and implantation?

Regards,

Thanks in advance

Mild work out is OK

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
Mild to moderate work out ,that is not vigorous exercise is advisable till you conceive.
Once pregnancy is confirmed, you can slow down.
Mild to moderate exercise does not affect conception, but one who has history of abortion should avoid during ovulation period.
