Suggest Treatment For UTI Inspite Of Using Cipro

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Jun 2014
Question: I am a 45 yr old healthy male. Have had a UTI for about a week, and been on cipro for 6 days....symptoms are not so bad, but it is not clearing up. Still have leukocytes in my urine. Could it take longer than 6 days to clear out the UTI? Or could the UTI not be responding to Cipro?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
possibly not responding enough

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Urinary tract infections can involve any aspect of the male urinary tract- ureter, kidneys, urethra, bladder or prostate.

Urinary tract infections are not common in males under the age of 50 , they are seen more after this age because of enlargement of the prostate.
Prostatic enlargement prevents the normal outflow of urine and increases the risk of infection.

Because uti are not as common in males as females and because it can sometimes take longer for a response, repeat urine cultures are often needed.

In your case where your urine analysis is showing persisting leukocytes, a repeat urine culture may be needed.
A urine culture would be able to determine if a bacteria is still present, which bacteria it is and which antibiotics would work best.

The urine culture would determine if it is resistant or sensitive to ciprofloxacin if a infection is still detected. If it is resistant then it would provide an indication of the appropriate alternative.

Summary: it is possible that it is resistant but a urine culture is needed to accurately determine this

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
