default
Posted on Tue, 14 Jul 2015
Question: I have a bump on my lower lip. My lip is smooth and then a tiny bump. It does not look like it is filled with anything. It is right on my lip line. It does not hurt but as a woman it is very noticeable when I wear lipstick. I was hoping you could tell me what it could be and what kind of treatment..

Brief Answer:
Looks like a small fibrous tissue deposition, probably a healed scar.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic.com

I have gone through your question and see the attached image.

There is indeed a small swelling in the lower lip and the skin over the swelling looks quite normal. I do not think this will cause any trouble except cosmetic discomfort.

You have mentioned that there is no pain and it does not feel like there is any fluid inside.

This leads me to suspect a trauma followed by scar formation. Trauma could be a bite, or direct injury to the lip probably a few years ago.

If there is absolutely no history of any trauma at all, then it could be a retention cyst.

A clinical diagnosis can only be made on examining the swelling physically. A picture does not give enough information to make that diagnosis.

You should consult a general surgeon or a cosmetic surgeon and get it looked at.

The treatment depends on the cause and nature of the problem.

If it is scar tissue, then probably intra-lesional steroid injections might reduce the size and make it disappear.

If it is a retention cyst of submucosal salivary glands, then a simple incision and drainage might be sufficient.

Kindly consult your local cosmetic surgeon or a general surgeon for a clinical examination and treatment.

Hope this answers your query, please feel free to write back to me if you have additional concerns.

Best regards
