Suggest Treatment For A Fatty Liver

default
Posted on Fri, 8 Jul 2016
Question: Hi my question is regarding the liver and pancreas function,

for the past 4 months I have had lipase levels from 100-130, also I got an ultrasound in the abdomen that reported a fatty liver, I am worry about my metabolism and pancreas, liver enzymes are ok, also I wanted to mention that I have itching and headache episodes throughout the day

the ultrasound partially evaluated the pancreas and reported unremarkable, also I have a non Contrast CT scan done in the abdomen/pelvis and nothing was reported, however I don't think my liver or pancreas are working good as I have been having kind of fatty stools and light green colour,

the US and the CT scan reported the bile duct OK however how can I ensure that the enzymes are been produced and transported accordingly.

could there be an issue in the digestive track?

is there any blood test or any other test I can do to ensure the pancreas and liver and actually working fine ?

thank you

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Chronic pancreatitis as part of mal absorption syndromes can occur. For diagnostic purposes, its usually found on CT scan as calcifications. The most accurate test is a secretin test or a low trypsin level.

If the liver enzymes and synthetic liver function parameters including PT and Albumin levels are within range then the liver is working fine.

If the fatty liver is associated with a raised ALT then XXXXXXX (Non alcoholic steatohepatitis ) should be considered and treated accordingly.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks

I will follow up with my Primary care doctor on the Pancreas test

Chronic pancreatitis will enlarged the pancreas right?

Hello again.

Yes, its possible. Its NAFLD (Non Alcoholic Fatty liver disease). If ALT gets raised then its progressed to XXXXXXX

Its good news that the ALT is not raised. Try to increase your output with regular exercise and cutting down on refined sugar and fat in your diet. Factors contributing to metabolic syndrome should also be addressed in consult with your doctor.

Hello again

The pancreas will have calcifications on both CT and x rays.

The pancreas is not necessarily enlarged in chronic pancreatitis.
