Suggest Treatment For A Red Bump On The Arm After An Insect Bite

Posted on Wed, 3 Aug 2016
Question: Sir
My son is 6 years 4 months old and 2 weeks back he was bitten by an insect on his right arm but we are not sure what had bitten him. for 3 days it was a bit swollen and bit itchy but after 3 days it became 2 or 3 inches big red bump and we went to see a doc.
the doc prescribed the following:-

01. Teczim Syrup - 5ml once daily for 7 days
02. Fudic BNF Ointment - Apply Locally 3 times a day

after 7 days the doctor discontinued teczim and gave Romilast L 5ml once daily for 10 days.

We are continuing to apply Fudic BNF Cream for the last 12 days but the bump is still there and it measures approximately the finger thumb size which is around 1inch x 1inch.
the bump pains only if it is pressed but it feels warm when we touch it
we are also putting salt water (hot) through cotton over the bump

please suggest what to do , some people said it has to be removed by cutting the skin which is painful for a 6 yr old
there is no fever or any other problem except a cough and sneezing which he has most of the times

Brief Answer:
Will settle soon. Procedure is safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Can.You upload some pictures of the swelling?
From your description it looks like a insect bite induced swelling.
Your doctor has adequately treated it with antibiotics, antiseptics and anti allergic medicines.
If there is no pain or redness no need to cut open it.
But I would advise you to show him to your doctor again to confirm the same.
Meanwhile continue treatment as advised.
If there is pus inside it needs to be cut open ( it's a simple procedure done safely at this age)
Wishing your child good health and speedy recovery.

Brief Answer:
Surgeon visit required

Detailed Answer:
I have seen both the pictures.
Definitely it is inflamed and red.
Needs surgeon visit at the earliest.
You have continued ointment for adequate time.
No use of boric acid application.
Abscess may not heal completely sometimes without the pus being let out.
Regards.

sir
may be it is red because we have given 3 times a day hot water mixed with salt warm cloth on it for 10 days

Brief Answer:
I don't think so

Detailed Answer:
Even if you have given hot water cloth with salt, it wouldn't cause the redness and swelling as seen in the pictures.
It is better to consult surgeon soon.
