Posted on Thu, 21 Jan 2016
Question: Hello I was extremely sick with pneumonia in March this year, my Dr had missed all the signs & I was sick for 5 months.. I was then in hospital for 7 days... Well the last 6 weeks I have been feeling unwell again chest pain, slight cough but with green mucus, abdominal pain, sweats. I went to my Dr today and mentioned I have been unwell & without an examination he gave me antibodies and that was it.. I'm thinking of filling up with my speciality Lung Dr tomorrow, as I'm terrified of being that unwell again.. I'm 53 year old woman who weighs 65 kg .. Kind regards XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Lung auscultation and chest x ray should be done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Green mucous is a sign of bacterial infection. Psudomonas or hemophilus or pneumococcal bacteria can cause greenish coloured sputum. Lung auscultation should be done to find signs of pneumonia and chest X ray will be needed also.

Antibiotic therapy will be required in such case. Amoxicillin is not that effective. If you were my patient then i would suggest Amoxicillin & clavulanic acid combination which gives a broad spectrum. I also advise mucolytics like ambroxol , bronchodilators like levosalbutamol and anti histamines like cetirizine along with antibiotics. A sputum culture and sensitivity is also advised which is good to find causative agent and sensitive antibiotics. A consultation with physician or Chest (lung) physician is well appreciated.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
