Question : I'm 53 yr old male 6ft 2 265 put on50 lbs in 4 yrs. feel awful. Always been sorta anxious. High strung. But yesterday I couldnt get the thought of my parents dying and leaving me. I take care of them when I'm home from work. Dementia. Etc. i woke up feeling out of sorts like I wasn't in my head. As nervous as I've ever been in my life. Unable to catch a deep breath. PalpAtions. And bursting out crying when I'm trying to explain. For some reason I've conv myself that this is all there is. I will never have my life back again. Went to er. Ran ekg normal except tachycardia blood work which showed i was dehydrated. The only yhing they did was put me on kolonopin 0.5. But a half of that twice a day. Didn't even take the edge off. So I took 0.5 that night. Did not make me sleepy at all. But did take the edge off for an hour or two or three. Then right back freaking out. Saw my gp. He took me off Effexor and started me on Zoloft 50 mg and told me to take 0.5 3 times a day because the small was obviously not working. I'm feeling pretty hopeless. Feeling that this is my life now and I. Scared to death. I want to feel normal again. I do have an apt with a psychiatrist but not untill may. I can't wait that long. I'm a big guy and this is literally killing me and my work. And I need to work but can't. Can I take 1 mg klonopin 3 times a day untill I see the psych. And I guess the Zoloft works? It's only been 2 days but I'm desperate. I feel there's no hope for me and I'm going to be like this forever. Please help me
Todd XXXXXXX Ps. All test in ee were normal. Ekg. Blood work. Was a little dehydrated though

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Don't worry... what you are experiencing is acute anxiety and panic, and this is not permanent... in fact it is highly treatable. The treatment for this is an SSRI medication such as Zoloft. The Zoloft you are taking is an excellent start... but it can take up to 4 weeks for this medication to reach full effect. You will need to have some patience, but you will feel better. Don't take Klonopin more than 0.5mg twice a day, because higher doses will lead to serious addiction. Just wait for the Zoloft to work.
