Question: Have a 4 yr. old grandson. Has been vomiting and diarrhea off and on since last Sunday. Other than that he has no fever and acts fine. Pediatrician finally took a stool sample after he had another bout of vomiting and diarrhea. We are at a loss as to what could be the problem and my daughter is not very strong when it comes to questioning the dr. And why this is happening. Can you help? He is a little guy who doesn't eat well to begin with, thank you. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Acute gastroenteritis. ORS is the treatment

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for posting on HealthCareMagic.

Your grandson is suffering from a gastrointestinal infection or gastroenteritis which manifests with diarrhoea and vomiting. The symptoms last for 3-5 days and then gradually resolve on its own. Unless associated with bloody stools, the cause does not need to be treated.

All you need to do is replenish the lost salt and water by the use of ORS. Unless that is done properly, the child will suffer from dehydration and become sick. With proper hydration, things should return to normal soon. Give the child Zinconia syrup (any zinc containing supplement) for a week. Give plenty of curd/yogurt and fluids. You may give Ondem MD (ondansetron mouth dissolving) tablet half such half an hour before meals in order to reduce the vomiting. Food would be normal but milk should be avoided for a week or so.
