Suggest Treatment For Acute Pain In The Joints Of The Hands

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Jan 2017
Question: During the last few days, I began experiencing rather acute pain in the joint area of my hand where my thumb meets the palm. I have taken Advil and applied Icyhot. Neither is working. I have phenazopyridine tablets in my medicine cabinet dated 3/27/2014. Are they OK to take? Should I go to my doctor to get a subscription/have my hand examined? If a doctor's visit is recommended, is there anything you can recommend until I can get an appointment?

Brief Answer:
Information

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Unfortunatley the phenazopyridine won't help your joint pain as it is a local anesthetic for the urinary tract.

If the pain came on abruptly, it may be due to a strain, in which a splint or thumb immobilizer may help until you go in to the doctor to have it examined.

For pain control for an acute injury, ibuprofen can be taken in dosages of up to 600 mg 3x/day. However higher dosages such as this should not be taken if you have a current history of acid problems or a history of gastritis, peptic ulcer, or bleeding. And always take it after you have food in your stomach.

An alternative would be to add acetaminophen (Tylenol).

But if these aren't controlling the pain, you should be seen urgently.

If not, I still recommend going in to see your doctor to have it examined.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
