Question: I'm 32 and I've been experiencing urine retention. I had a catheter placed in two days ago it's slightly uncomfortable. I've been having a lot of leakage accompanied by a burning sensation. I've soak a few pads a day .is this a normal reaction from the catheter

Brief Answer:
No this is not normal after placement of urinary catheter.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to HCM. I would have them check the bulb and irrigate the catheter, it seems that it has not formed a proper seal and this happens when the inflatable balloon (with water) is not adequately inflated. The burning sensation should also subside but this may be due to the constant leakage of urine throughout the day. I hope this helps and good luck.

Brief Answer:
Yes please goo to the ER, the pain you describe is absolutely not normal.

Detailed Answer:
Please proceed to the ER that pain you talk about is not normal, at the very least, they will check and make sure that you do not have a urinary tract infection which this could be, and in any event they will probably replace the catheter. Good luck and take care. I hope this has really helped you, I wish you a quick resolution.

Brief Answer:
The urethra is wider that usual leading to leakage of catheter.

Detailed Answer:
This is means that the bladder is always going to be wider than the catheter that is placed in it, imagine (excuse the analogy) a loose pair of tube socks that refuse to stay on your feet. This is what is happening and that explains why the catheter was almost out.
