Suggest Treatment For Alopecia Areola On Scalp While On Levoxyl

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Mar 2016
Question: I had thyroid cancer 7 years ago and had my thyroid removed. I am 58. I take 113 mcg Levoxyl daily. About 9 months ago I developed alopecia areola on my scalp. I went to a local dermatologist in Manhattan Beach and received several rounds of cortizone injections; the condition has gotten worse. I now have 8-10 rings on my scalp, about the size of a dime. Read online to apply green tea to the spots and so I did this daily for five months. The condition got worse. I am a dietitian and exercise regularly.
Someone recommended a dermatologist, Dr. xxxxxx from UCLA, that invented his own topical cream. It is difficult for me to drive to UCLA, any suggestions on how to correct this problem?

Brief Answer:
Dermatologist

Detailed Answer:
Very sorry to note your challenging hair condition.

I see you have met with a dermatologist and followed a treatment program of steroid injections in the scalp. I strongly encourage you to consider seeing the same one or another dermatologist again.
Alopecia can be a difficult condition to treat. A formally trained dermatologist is your best chance for good results.

It is important to ensure you are in good health overall and that your levoxyl dose is appropriate.
When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC
Electrolytes
Calcium
HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin = your 3 month glucose average)
Liver function tests
Kidney function tests
TSH
Free T4
25 hydroxy Vitamin D
