Suggest Treatment For Amenorrhea

Question: I had eating disorder- bulimia for 9 years, I stopped purging 2 months ago.
Last 9 months I've been pill so I wasn't aware if I had problems with my period, before that I had no problems, it was regular.
Is it possible that I didn't notice due to the pill but I didn't have my period maybe? If so how long does it take after bulumia to recover in terms of periods?

I'm asking this because I think I have low estrogen in my body.

Brief Answer:
Amenorrhea may be due to illness or drug therapy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,

I have gone through your query.

I understand your concern.

Eating disorder are of two types.
1. Anorexia nervosa in which restricted eating along with body image distortion and keeping minimal weight with 15% or less.

Many a times this disorder itself associate with amenorrhoea means absence of menstrual flow due to hormonal imbalance.

2. Bulemia nervosa in which most common is purging behavior with normal or over weight.
It is not associated with amenorrhoea.

So in your case, give me brief history in above mentioned points to reach proper diagnosis.

History of weight or body mass index?
Detail history of your menstrual period?

You said you have been on medicine but you did not mention the name of the drug?

Many medicines have side effects like amenorrhea.

So tell me about your treatment.

Low estrogen is most likely seen with eating disorder and estrogen replacement therapy will help to maintain menstrual blood flow.

So please revert back with all this details.

Thank you.

Take care.

Hello,

Many thanks.

I have been on microgynon 30 birth control pill for 6 months, that's what I meant by 'pill'.

There were sometimes I was underweight during bulimia but now my body weight is normal now. I'm 1.74 cm and 56kgs. My concern is if I lost my period due to bulimia in the last 6 months, maybe I didn't understand because of the pill. Before this 6 months, I had regular and heavy periods.

I had night sweats a little bit for 6 months with microgynon, since I stopped they became very severe. I am wondering if it could be related to estrogene.

Brief Answer:
yes microgynon contains estrogen.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear

Thank you for reply.

Yes microgynon is birth control pill which contains combination of estrogen and progesterone.

I m wondering if you are taking that pill acc. to advise then why you have amenorrhea??

It will help to maintain regular period.

It will help also in amenorrhea due to eating disorder.
Night sweating may be part of hormonal imbalance and estrogen is one of them. It will improve with estrogen suppliments.

My advise to take gynecological opinion for this reason. Ultrasonography is must to find out stages of follicles.

You are on estrogen suppliments and still you do not have period then need to find out other reasons.

Please tell me about medicines that have you taken for bulemia.

Still have a query then feel free to ask.

Please do consult gynecologist.

Always happy to help you.

Thank you.

Take care.
