Suggest Treatment For Anemia
Welcome to HealthcareMagic!
Detailed Answer:
The diagnosis of anemia is complex and iron is not always the problem. If the doctor just looks at the Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, MCV and MCH they cannot diagnosed Iron deficiency with certainty. Iron deficiency is clarified by running a serum ferritin, TIBC (total iron binding capacity) and total iron. So if no improvement is seen in 3 months (the life span of a red blood cell), I would request a full iron panel (if not already done), a check on B12 and folic acid.
Your main question on what you can eat for anemia besides iron supplements.
Foods high in iron include:
- meat, pork and poultry products.
- Seafood.
- Beans.
- Dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach.
- Dried fruit, such as raisins and apricots.
- Iron-fortified cereals, breads and pastas.
- Peas.
If you eat a food high in vitamin C along with the source of iron it will increase the absorption of the iron you do eat.
I hope this helps and am happy to hear that you are feeling well.
