default
Posted on Tue, 22 Dec 2015
Question: Have had ankle and foot pain for 5 months. Evaluated for possible rheumatoid arthritis. In the meantime Dr. prescribed Diclofenac sodium 75 Mg twice daily. In the meantime, I was prescribed a Methylprednisone pack for 6 days for something unrelated. I now see that this can be a dangerous combination?. By the way I am 62 in relatively good health otherwise

Brief Answer:
risk of increasing each others actions

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

There is a risk of interaction with these two medications.

There is increased risk of ulceration of the stomach since they can both potentially cause gastritis (inflammation of the stomach).
This risk is reduced if used with meals but it is still present.

In addition to this possible complication, these medications also work by a method called pharmcodynamic synergism. This means that they act at similar points or in similar ways in the body to cause each drug to have additional or more effects.

This means that they each increase each others action.

This would occur with any member of the NSAID family of medications (includes ibuprofen, naproxen, celebrex etc)

You may need to use an alternative pain killer while you are on this course eg codeine, tramadol, paracetamol

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
