default
Posted on Thu, 1 Oct 2015
Question: I woke up with my ankle bothering me. It's swollen or puffy under the one and very uncomfortable. I am 69 years old and never had this happen before. The last time I had blood work done, which was about two months ago, it was at 99. I was never diagnosed with diabetes. Please advise! Thank you,

Brief Answer:
It can be due to high blood pressure

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case and this condition is called ankle edema. In your age group it is mostly caused by high blood pressure, thyroid or Diabetes. As you have said that you are not having high sugar or thyroid then most common cause is high blood pressure.
I would suggest you to get your thyroid profile and blood pressure check. If it high then you need to avoid high salt intake and may need to take blood pressure medicines.
I would also suggest you to get x ray of your ankle, as some time there is arthritis in the ankle and it can cause fluid accumulation.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks
