Suggest Treatment For Anxiety Inspite Of Using Prozac

Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: My fifteen year old daughter has been on 20mg of prozac for last two months for depression with social anxiety. Had lifted depression slightly but didn't help with anxiety. Switched three days ago to literal 50mg, experiencing major low today. Is this to be expected or should dosage of lustral be higher to be equvilant to 20mg of prozac?

Brief Answer:
Yes it needs to be increased

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for using health care magic for posting your query.
I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.

Lusteral and prozac are two different medications and there cannot be equvalent doses for the same. But the higher dose of prozac for depression is 20mg and the same for sertraline is 200mg. Although we cannot say that the effect of 200mg of lusteral is equivalent to 20mg of fluoxetine, but in your case, the dosage has to be increased.
The 50mg has to go up to 100mg for 1 week and if required to 150 mg next week and again if required to 200mg.
Even if this is not effective then it would be wise to add up bupropion to the current medications. This will further help in treating depression.
Further she may also consider taking sessions of cognitive behavioural therapy along with the medicines as those are very helpful. They will try to identify the aberrant thoughts and try to correct them.
Hope this was helpful.
If you have any further queries, feel free to ask them.
Kind regards

Thanks for your reply. However it may take a few days before I can get an appointment with her doctor. I know I can't just up her dose on my own, she has only had three days of the literal should she go back to the prozac until she gets appointment or is it dangerous to swap from one to another. Just scared about the big drop in her mood and she due to go on day trip tomorrow with her school.

Brief Answer:
Let her continue with lustral

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Let her continue with lustral as of now. Whenever she will be switched from prozac to lustral these symptoms will come up. She may take a couple of days but later she will feel good about that. Let the bad says pass by.
