Question: I live in Broomfield CO, my brother lives in San XXXXXXX CA. Last night after a CT scan he was told he has an aortic aneurysm. I'm aware of the severity of such a diagnosis, especially when you consider the possibility of it rupturing. I understand the scan show a 6cm size. I recommended that he see his primary care doc ASAP, and of course, he was not available all of today. I'm telling my brother and his brother who was visiting him from XXXXXXX CA to find our if a physician can give them assurance that this is not an emergent situation, and that if they can't get any answers, to put themselves in the ER until someone can assure them that this can wait. Can you give me an advice?

Brief Answer:
Tricky diagnosis

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for yuor question. Welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

Well, it is indeed a major diagnosis, a aneurysm of the aorta. Now, up to this moment it considered a good news. The good news is that it was discovered. Aneurysms of the aorta are situations that cause us a lot of unsettlements. A person with this diagnosis may live 5 minutes, also may live 5 years with it. Therefore, we cannot act like "God". I would recommend for him to as soon as possible be admitted in a coronary care unit, where further evaluation will be done. The course of action is that he will undergo a coronary angiogram, to assess the coronary arteries, and then he will undergo cardiac surgery, to surgically repair the damaged and aneurysmatic aorta.

I hope my answer is helpful. If you have any follow-up questions, I am happy to help.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
