Suggest Treatment For Asthma In An Elderly Person

Question: I've been diagnosed with asthma over a year ago. I am 63. I may have had it without knowledge since 2013. I thought I was having anxiety attacks. My dr has been treating me with Symbicort with 2 puffs in morning and 2 puffs at night. After a year of this, I haven't felt any better. Just last week he changed my treatment to 1 puff of Symbicort with 1 puff of Xopenex (which is my rescue inhaler) in morning and repeat the same at night. This seems odd to me. I upon treat of all, it hurts to take a deep breath. Of course I get breathless. I've had only 1 asthma attack that put me into the hospital. What is your thought on this? He told me I may not know the difference between my asthma attack and panic/anxiety attacks. I know my athma trigger is my panic/anxieties. I feel the heaviness in my Chest constantly and the feeling of like someone just jumped out from a tree and said BOO! I feel helpless. I'm not comfortable with my doctor. He scares me like I'm in the principals office. I guess my main question is about the medication change,Mohicans has always given me heart palpitations. Ok. I'm done asking.

Brief Answer:
Your inhalers are correct.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Symbicort is having budesonide (inhaled corticosteroids) and formoterol (inhaled bronchodilator).
Both are best drugs for asthma.
Xeponex I'd having levosalbutamol. This is again best rescue inhaler.
So in my opinion, you are taking correct drugs.
In your, I feel that we should first control your stress and anxiety because these can trigger asthma attacks.
So please let me know
1. Are you taking any drug for stress and anxiety?

Yes. I am taking Klonopin for anxiety prescribed 2 x a day as needed. It seems to help me the most with my asthma. I about feel since the asthma medication makes me feel worse by giving me the jitters like a strong cup of coffe, I could do better with just the Klonopin 3 times a day. Helps me to sleep. When I cannot sleep I take Ambien; however I do not do that very often. I may even break both Klonopin and Ambien apart depending on what my body tells me.

Brief Answer:
What was your PFT report?

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Now I have to think whether you have asthma or not because you are saying that you are improving only with knolopin.
Stress and anxiety may mimick asthma like symptoms.
So to differentiate between these two, PFT abnormality should be there.
If PFT is abnormal (obstructive Airway defect) then possibility of asthma is more.
So please let me know
1. Have you ever undergone PFT report?
2. If yes then what is your last PFT report?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

What is PFT. I HAVE had to blow into a tube-like instrument where a technician was inputting results on computer. The doctor verified I have asthma.

You should also take counselling sessions. So consult psychiatrist and get done counselling sessions. Try to identify stressor in your life and start working on it's solution.
