Question: I am bipolar and in a manic phase. In the last week I have heard voices three times that no one else heard. They were loud but not clear. I have never had this happen before. What does this mean for me?

Brief Answer:
they are auditory hallucinations

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

In psychiatry terminology perception without stimulation is called hallucination.

When someone hears voices alone and others do not hear, it is called auditory hallucination.
From your history it is clear that you had auditory hallucination.
Auditory hallucination is very common symptom in psychiatric disorders. It is also called positive symptom of schizophrenia. It also can occur in bipolar disorder.

Treatment of frequent auditory hallucination is anti psychotic medicines. Specifically typical first generation anti psychotic medicines are more useful.

If there is no frequent hallucination in your case, no need to concern much. If frequency is more and troubling you, ask your doctor for evalaution and treatment.

Hope I havr answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Dr.Chintan Solanki.
