Question : My 29 year old son is beginning to realize that he may have a personality disorder and some degree of autism. He has been unable to complete his grade 12 and has great difficulty keeping a job. For many years he has suspected that he has a personality disorder (borderline personality disorder), but has been too afraid to vocalize it to a GP because he doesn't want to be disbelieved. Now the issue of autism has arisen, and he would like to know how to proceed. He knows several people who have these conditions and have strongly urged that he look into it. What would you advise? Does he need a Psychologist, or a Psychiatrist? He has a GP and is currently awaiting a Psych referral. He lives in XXXXXXX Canada.

Brief Answer:
He needs psychiatrist at first place

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks fusing Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

For the assessment of personality disorder and autism in a 29 year young man, psychiatrist will bet the first better option as he have capability to diagnose as well as prescribe while psychologist can help him in only for diagnosis.

Although I do not have much information why he belies so but the likelihood is very low of at least borderline personality disorder because in BPD patient almost never complaints but the family members and significant others get more problem due to abnormal behavior of the patient.

I hope this answers your question.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
