Question: my wife is 33 years old.one lump was found in the left side of her throat for last 1 years.as she didn't feel any problem hence she didn't consult with doctor. In the month of September,2015 we consulted our family physician and he instructed for USG of neck.We did it and the report stated a nodule on the left lobe of her thyroid gland. Then doctor told us to consult with an ENT and accordingly we made an appointment.ENT told us to perform FNAC and it has already been made.It states that the said lump is nodular Goitre.ENT after observing FNAC report advised for operation. My wife didn't feel any problem with this lump but very recently she is complaining about a pain in the said area especially when she is working by bending her body.My questios are :
a) what should be our next course of action?
b) I am attaching all papers for your consideration. Please tell me whether operation is essential? what problem may occur if the lump remains unoperated?
c) why this pain is developing?

Brief Answer:
Benign thyroid nodule.

Detailed Answer:
dear sir, hi! this is dr XXXXXXX thyroid is known to have thyroid nodules, they are usually benign. if your wife is euthyroid and not symptomatic then nothing is to be done , only close follow up. if she has thyroid dysfunction then thyroxine replacement is recommended. sudden increase in size, sudden pain can be due to internal bleeding but that too can be managed without surgery. surgery is only suggested if
1. there is malignancy
2. compression of food pipe
3. compression of wind pipe.
so annual follow up is sufficient.
