Question: My 75 year old mother in laws eye has turned black over the last few days. it started in one corner and now the entire eye is black. Today was a little painful but otherwise vision seems to be fine. She has high blood pressure and is on medication for that, she is also on oxygen. she has a Dr.s appointment in 2 weeks and wants to wait until then to seek treatment. i thought perhaps it was a subconjuctival hemorrhage from her blood pressure but it has gotten worse .

Brief Answer:
Subconjunctival hemorrhage does not require treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic.

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history.
From the details you have provided it appears like subconjunctival hemorrhage and ecchymosis of the eyelids called as black eye. This occurs because of collection of blood in the layers of the skin of the eyelids and under the conjunctiva.

It commonly occurs following injuries but can occur spontaneously in people with hypertension, diabetes or other conditions.

In your mother in law's condition it appears that her blood pressure is the most likely cause.
This condition is harmless and no treatment is required. This will decrease slowly as the blood gets absorbed. Applying cold compression will be of help.

If possible do send me a photo of the affected eye so that I confirm the diagnosis and advice you accordingly.

Hope this answers your question and the information is helpful to you.

Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you
With regards
