Question: My wife has HSV antibodies in her blood and is suffering from blisters on the corners of her mouth. She has had this now for two months. The blisters are not like cold sores but are very shallow. She is 75 years old and has an auto immune deficiency and stomach problems which keep her from being able to take an oral antiviral medication. Is there any IV or injection antiviral medications available

Brief Answer:
There is intravenous valacyclovir (Valtrex).

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this herpes and the sores that your wife has. I understand her plight and hope we would be able to find solutions to this. There are intravenous formulations of acyclovir. However administering this IV would be very demanding as it would need the presence of a nurse and an intravenous catheter in place. I will like that you discuss the possibilities of this with your doctor.

The answer is yes, there are intravenous formulations of valacyclovir. Talk to your doctor about this so that he can figure out the possibility of administering this at home.

I hope this helps. I wish your wife a speedy recovery. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
