Question : I am having a bloating pain in my lower abdomen. it feels like really bad gas but I'm not sure. It woke me up last night as I rolled over and it was a pretty severe pain but it went away within minutes. I have had this for the last couple of days. It is primarily on my lower left abdomen but when it really hurts, which is occasionally, it hurts my entire middle, front and back.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Brief Answer:
Clinical acumen and investigations

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.

To recapitulate: Male/46 - not visited Doctor - took Gas-X - bloating pain in lower abdomen - not sure whether this is gas or not - woke you up last night but persisted for minutes only - going on for couple of days - when it hurts bad, involves entire middle, front and back.

Such a history is more suggestive of partial volvulus of the sigmoid colon or may be due to intestinal obstruction.

I would advise you in such a situation the following:
Clinical evaluation and examination preferably by a General Surgeon.
X-ray of the abdomen in the standing position.
Laxative to clear the bowel as loaded colon can give similar picture.

Getting early and proper diagnosis is the key to successful treatment.
Many a times the clinical acumen along with the investigations can clinch the diagnosis and you may need to go for further tests like:
Barium enema test.
CT scan of the abdomen and so on depending upon the clinical picture.

I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you need to or if you feel that there is a gap-of-communication.
